Socialize This 2.0.0 – Update Details

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

Socialize This 2.0.0 is quite an interesting update, as  I have pretty much recoded the majority of the plugin from top to bottom.

It’snow  a lot faster at showing the icons and overall the backend performance is also better.

Key Changes

Firstly, when you check the plugin page instead of showing you the settings, it now shows you a list of your most Socialized posts/pages.

The settings page has also had a little overhaul. I worked really hard to simply settings up some of Socialize This’ features, for example the Twitter integration now uses OAuth which means you no longer need to input your Twitter details, you just have to click a link and the plugin should do the rest.

The Widgets management has also been changed significantly. One of the big changes is that you now have real life previews of the widgets. I have have added the functionality for you to add your own widgets into the plugin via a neat form.

The Widget Set XML files have also been updated – If you are using your own social icon set you will need to update to the newer XML layout.

Lastly, one of the biggest changes is the way the widgets are displayed. They are now returned in a list and I have included a CSS file which should format them nicely (Though it can be disabled on the “Advanced Functions/Settings” page.

Important Notes

Because of the big structural changes to the Socialize This back end when you upgrade you will lose a good deal of the previous data (I’m sorry!) . Namely the active widgets you have selected/added. So you will need to update your settings.

Automatic update should be mostly headache free, however I recommend deactivating Socialize This, deleting it and then uploading and installing the new version (Though, it’s totally optional).

Final Notes

Thank you for giving Socialize This 2.0.0 a try. I’m currently overhauling the FAQ section (Hopefully – I’ll have time to make a few video tutorials), if you have time make sure you give it the quick once over.

Socialize This 1.6.3 – Update Details

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

I am currently working on finishing Socialize This 1.6.3, it’s due to be finished on the 6th of April 2010, though I expect I will update it into the WordPress Repository on the 7th of April. Here is what I currently expect to be in it:

  • Bit.ly Support – I decided to pull it out of 1.6.2 because I was rushed to get an update out and working correctly. It has now been added.
  • Small UI tweaks – Little things like hiding unnecessary elements in the page has been added. I’ve also added Twitter/bit.ly credential verification.
  • is.gd is now the default URL shortening service – This modification will only affect new installations of socialize this. I decided to change from tr.im because is.gd appears to offer a faster and more reliable service.
  • I’ve started work on a API my end so users of Socialize This can easily see when new social widget sets are available and easily install them. However, that is a feature for v1.6.4. For now I’ve added a simple important announcements notification system.
Encase you’re wondering, the API access can be disabled on the “Advanced Functions/Settings” page.

It’s important to note that from this version (1.6.3) on, I have discontinued Socialize This support for PHP4. For now PHP4 users will be offered a cut down version of v1.6.3.

Socialize This – V1.1

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

I just updated the Plugin Socialize This in regards to a Private/Public function and variable error. Basically I forgot to check how the plugin worked in a PHP4 environment.
